Harris Round 4

Harris House

Brandi Harris (G1, Family, Golden Anniversary)
Remington Harris (G1, Family, Golden Anniversary)
Luke Harris (G2)

---- *** -----

Brandi, Remington and Luke move into their new home. It’s a two bedroom bungalow with a separate outbuilding which they plan to convert into a shop. On arrival, Brandi pauses outside and looks up at the house.

Brandi: Well here we are, Luke. The start of a new life. What d’you think?

Luke: Lello house.

Brandi: Yes, sweetie, it’s yellow. Shall we go explore?

Luke: Lukie wanna see!

Brandi laughs and takes her youngest son inside.

----- *** -----

Remington and Brandi waste no time building their dream. After handing in their notice to their employers, they start on construction. First, they build a small pond and a vegetable garden. Brandi soon discovers that fishing is both enjoyable and profitable. Whereas, Remington prefers talking to plants…

Remington also calls the foster agency. After a vigorous inspection, the Harris family are declared fit parents and the agency approves their application. But before they welcome a new child into their home, Remington takes time to explain their plans to Luke.

Remington: So, Luke, how would you like another sister or brother?

Luke: A what? But… I thought Mom… Well, you know…

Remington: You thought Mom was too old to have any more kids?

Luke flushes bright red. He knows all about how babies are made but he isn’t comfortable having this conversation with his Dad. Remington takes pity on his embarrassed son and rushes to explain further.

Remington: No, we aren’t planning to have a baby of our own. We would like to adopt a child.

Luke: Oh! Er… I dunno… would I have to share my room?

Remington: Yes, you would. Would that be so bad?

Luke: I suppose not.

Remington decides not to push any further. Luke has enjoyed his parents' undivided attention all his life. But he’s a good kid and Remington is confident he will adapt to the change.

A few months later, Alvin joins the Harris house.

Alvin's mother gave birth to him at fifteen but she was more fond of drugs then caring for her son. The identity of Alvin’s father is uncertain. He was removed from his mother’s care when he was just a baby and has spent his early childhood moving from one foster home to the next. Brandi is the first to greet Alvin.

Brandi: Hello, I’m Brandi. Welcome to your new home.

Alvin surprises his foster mother by reaching up and hugging her.

Alvin: Thank you, Mrs Harris. This is amazing – I’ve never been to a place like this.

Brandi: Please, call me Brandi or… Mom. Whichever you prefer.

Alvin: OK, Mom! Can I see my bedroom now?

Brandi is taken aback by Alvin’s confidence. But she’s glad she can offer this outgoing child a fresh chance in life.

----- *** -----

Alvin easily adapts to the Harris way of life. He helps out in the garden and is a competent fisherman.

It works out so well that when the foster agency contacts the Harrises about another child who needs a home, they immediately say yes. One week later, Erik arrives.

Erik is less outgoing than Alvin but he’s a nice and playful kid.

At last, Remington is able to implement the final phase in his plan. He works hard to convert the outbuilding into a small flower and fresh produce shop. While the children are at school, Brandi and Remington work in the store. Remington looks after sales while Brandi, who is now an elder, handles the cash.

Darren: Good morning, Mrs Harris.

Brandi: Oh, er… Mr Dreamer. It’s good to see you. Just one moment and I’ll er… add up your items.

Darren hands over a ten simolean note and Brandi fumbles with the cash register. She traps her thumb in the cash drawer for the third time that day.

Brandi: Ow! Sh*t!

Darren: Are you OK, Mrs Harris?

Brandi blushes as several customers look up on hearing her loud expletive.

Brandi: Yes, yes thank you. I’m sorry. It takes time getting used to this darn machine.

Darren laughs and eyes Brandi speculatively. There is something on his mind but he isn’t sure whether this is the right time to bring it up.

Brandi: Is there anything else I can help you with?

Darren: Well… yes. I was hoping to talk about the upcoming wedding.

Brandi: Wedding?

Darren: Yes. My step daughter and your son. Bella and Dustin.

Brandi: Oh yes of course.

Darren: Bella graduates from University soon and I was thinking the families should get together and celebrate the engagement. We could also discuss some wedding plans. You see this wedding is very important to my wife, Cassandra. She wants Bella to have a special day and we’re prepared to pay for the very best.

Brandi: Um, er… yes… a get together. That would be very nice.

Darren: Wonderful! I’ll ask Cass to give you a call. Good bye.

Brandi watches Darren leave; her heart feels heavy in her chest. So now she has to face Bella Goth’s daughter and her granddaughter. Why oh why did Dustin have to get involved with the Goth family?

Aww, Brandi and Remi will make great parents. And maybe this meeting will help calm Brandi's apprehension about the Goths.

Hmmm--a get together? Might be an opportunity for some old secrets to surface at last--

Brandy and Remington are doing a great job adopting the kids.

A get together with the Goths? Why do I think that might not be a good idea?
